3 Steps After Leaving the Hospital
Leaving the hospital with aphasia can feel overwhelming.
You do not have to figure everything out at once. These are three places to start as you continue your recovery.
1. Get professional support
A speech-language pathologist can help you practice communication in a structured way.
You can ask your doctor, hospital team, insurance company, or local rehabilitation center to help you find a speech-language pathologist in your area.
2. Practice at home
Practice can happen in small moments.
You can work on word finding, reading, writing, speaking, or everyday communication. Go at a pace that feels manageable, and take as many breaks as you need.
3. Join a support group
Aphasia can feel isolating, but you are not alone.
Support groups can help you connect with people who understand what aphasia feels like. You can look for in-person groups, virtual groups, or caregiver support groups.
